Mary LeGrand, RN, MA, CCS-P, CPC
Consultant and Speaker

Mary LeGrand, a nationally recognized coding and reimbursement expert works with physician practices in all aspects of the care continuum (e.g. solo physician, specialty group practices, multidisciplinary groups, academic divisions/departments, and hospital employed physicians).  Mary’s expertise and strong clinical background as a Registered Nurse and Certified Coder (CCS-P and CPC) places her in high demand to present coding and documentation seminars addressing physician, coding and billing staff, management education needs.  Mary’s fast paced, high energy presentation style leave physicians, staff and managers always wanting more. While some may say a physician will never sit through a coding course, Mary’s knowledge and style allays that concern early in the presentation and results in a high demand for continued coding and billing support.  Mary’s business acumen positions her to perform critical analyses of physician practice’s reimbursement processes and systems and she is an expert in EOB (Explanation of Benefit) reviews to detect exactly what is occurring and recommending/implementing coding/documentation and business changes to achieve optimal efficiency and optimize reimbursement

In addition to Mary’s speaking expertise she is in constant demand to perform prospective and retrospective coding and documentation audits. She has become the expert in EMR documentation reviews identifying many risk areas associated with template design, process flow (staff, physician’s and paper) and risk associated with lack of customization of patient visits and opportunities to assess integration of E&M guidelines into the  EMR logic.

Mary is an instructor for KZA's national coding and reimbursement workshop series, sponsored by the the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Academy of Otolaryngology, and the American College of Surgeons. Additionally using her clinical background and her dual coding certifications she is well versed in conducting coding and documentation reviews and EOB /revenue cycle reviews across both medical and surgical specialties.

Mary brings to her consulting assignments over thirty years of professional nursing and administrative experience, including leadership positions on several National Boards. Her skills and savvy are beneficial to practices involved in change management projects.

Mary is a regular featured speaker and consultant nationally for specialty societies, state societies, and academic centers. Mary publishes regularly on coding and documentation related issues.

Previous to her consulting and speaking roles at KZA, Mary held various clinical and administrative positions at the Washington University School of Medicine affiliated Barnes-Jewish Hospital (BJC Health System) in St. Louis, Missouri.

Mary has a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and a Master of Arts in Health Services Management from Webster University in St. Louis.
