Placement of a Seroma Catheter
Question:
I had to place a catheter system into a seroma on a postoperative patient. Neither I nor any of my partners did the surgery. The patient showed up in the ER because she was on vacation. I don’t see a code for placing a seroma catheter. How should I bill this?
Answer:
You are right, there is no code for just putting in a drain or seroma catheter. You might want to look at CPT 10140 (Incision and drainage of hematoma, seroma or fluid collection) to see if it meets your needs – placing the drain would be included in the I&D.
