Lab Services: In or Out of Network
According to a recent AMNews article, UnitedHealth Group (UHG) announced to physicians in November 2006 that effective March 1, UHG will institute a policy that will minimally fine a physician $50 if a patient goes outside United's network for lab services. UHG plans to transfer the cost of the patient using an out-of-network lab to the physician. UHG's goal is to encourage physicians to refer patients to in-network labs.
Action Steps
-
Review UnitedHealth Group correspondence to determine if your practice received such notice.
-
Review your contract to determine if this action, if communicated, maintains contract compliance.
-
If implemented, determine if there are restrictions to having patients sign waivers and bear the burden of this additional cost.
-
Encourage patients to contact employers and UnitedHealth Group to voice their concerns about lack of choice of health care providers.
