Lab Services: In or Out of Network

According to a recent AMNews article, UnitedHealth Group (UHG) announced to physicians in November 2006 that effective March 1, UHG will institute a policy that will minimally fine a physician $50 if a patient goes outside United's network for lab services. UHG plans to transfer the cost of the patient using an out-of-network lab to the physician. UHG's goal is to encourage physicians to refer patients to in-network labs.

Action Steps

  1. Review UnitedHealth Group correspondence to determine if your practice received such notice.

  2. Review your contract to determine if this action, if communicated, maintains contract compliance.

  3. If implemented, determine if there are restrictions to having patients sign waivers and bear the burden of this additional cost.

  4. Encourage patients to contact employers and UnitedHealth Group to voice their concerns about lack of choice of health care providers.
