New Patient Visit

New Patient Visit

July 23 , 2020

Question:
Is this a new patient visit? I saw a new patient last week in the ED for a wound infection and reported my service with the ED code 99284. He came into the office today for a new patient office visit. I documented a detailed history and examination and prescribed medication. Can I report 99203 for the visit?

Answer:
Since your first face to face encounter with the patient was the ED visit and when the patient comes to the office for follow up you would report an established patient visit code (99212-99215) based on the key components documented along with medical necessity. You only report a new patient visit when a practitioner in the same group/same specialty has not had a face to face encounter with the patient in three years.
