Nurse Practitioner Covering for Allergy Testing and Shots

Nurse Practitioner Covering for Allergy Testing and Shots

December 13, 2018

Question:
When our physicians are out of the office our NP will cover the office. We have allergy testing and shots that we provide to patients and we use her as the supervising billing provider. We were recently audited and told she couldn’t supervise testing.  Is this true?

Answer:
Yes, it is for Medicare.  However, you’ll need to survey each payor, or look in their provider manual, to determine that payor’s billing guidelines for the NP to supervise allergy testing.  In our experience, many (if not most) payors do follow Medicare’s guidelines which state a Nurse Practitioner (or Physician Assistant) may not bill for supervised diagnostic testing.
