Question:

Our surgeon saw a patient in the global period for an unrelated problem and did not bill for the E&M. I asked him why and he said “all E&M services during the global period are included in the surgical package.” Is his statement correct?

Answer:

Thanks for sending your question. The surgeon is partially correct in that all E&M services related to the surgical procedure for which the global period applies are inclusive. However, unrelated problems typically at different anatomic locations and different diagnoses are separately reportable. Append modifier 24 when the unrelated E&M services is performed and documented and is truly unrelated to the global surgical package.
